Third Order Franciscan Sisters I: St Francis; LaCrosse; Oldenburg; Glen Riddle; Cincinnati; Allegany; Syracuse; Buffalo; Joliet; Peekskill

The Third Order Franciscan Sisters section was an eclectic set of congregational histories.  They are designated here by their proper congregational names, along with location, in the next several blog posts.  There are approximately 54 congregations covered.

The Franciscan section was a challenge.  While the Dominican congregations had come from one of two main European motherhouses, or had branched off another domestic congregation, some Franciscans were domestic, and others, from foreign lands. Several had identical congregational names. Three cities had two or more congregations.  For someone unfamiliar with the geography, note-taking was indispensable for keeping track of everything.

I found a couple of congregations that had been left out of the narratives altogether, so I must be in good company where the confusion is concerned!  These congregations were listed in the appendix, though. I found one congregation that wasn't in Dehey at all, but a Google search revealed that they were in existence at the time of publication.  I have included them.

Vocational Links have their own post.

At any rate, we are now halfway through Dehey. The next set of uber-posts will be the Benedictines.  They will be preceded by two or three smaller posts.

Now to our subject-at-hand...

Sisters of St Francis of Assisi, St Francis, WI:

Nickname: Lake Franciscans

This congregation was actually preceded by Secular Franciscans from Germany.  They were invited by the bishop to be missionaries among the immigrants.  A number of their adherents became the foundresses of this premier Third Order Regular of St Francis of Assisi congregation in the US.

The congregation joined with Syracuse and Hastings-on-Hudson to form the Franciscan Sisters of the Neumann Communities in the 2000s. The Williamsville Sisters deeded the land to the Town of Amherst for Amherst State Park. The current state of the former motherhouse is unknown.

School Sisters of Notre Dame: Milwaukee; Baltimore; St Louis; Mankato

The School Sisters of Notre Dame were founded in Germany, and are the spiritual cousins of the Congregation of Our Lady. The latter was founded by St Peter Fourier and Blessed Alix LeClerc.

SSND foundress Theresa Gerhardinger had been educated by the Fourier religious.  The clergy assisting her with the project strongly suggested that she adapt the Fourier spirituality.

***Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of the page. There are apparently a number of Augustinian Canonesses in Germany.***

All of the SSND US motherhouses are apparently up for sale, if I understand the Mankato link correctly.

(One thing I found almost unbelievable was that the Mankato convent had hosted a (pagan?) winter solstice ceremony)!!!

However, back to the tour...

I never knew that the SSND had moved to Elm Grove. Having never taken an interest in teaching, I had never followed up until now.

This blog post is timely. The sisters are vacating the property almost as we speak (or should it be "read"?):
