Updates -- And They Ain't Good

Where I've been for literally the last year:

I've not only been very busy with other projects -- not the least of which is our emerging secular institute -- but also my book on the history of Knoxville Old City Hall.  

I also had a change of device a couple of years ago. This Chromebook is not as convenient as the tablet, so the mini-laptop doesn't get used as much as the tablet did.  I asked St. Anthony of Padua's help on this, and here I am. 

However, back to our subject, the Dehey Tour and some updates. 

I wish I didn't have to write this, but there are a few updates regarding the old convent properties we have covered on this blog.

Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament: Brownsville; Corpus Christi; Houston; San Antonio; Victoria; Cleveland

The IWBS is one of my favorite congregations. I shall explain why. 

My original inspiration for the nurses-for-priests congregation (my reason for being in nursing school) was a royal blue habit with same color scapular. On said scapular would be a gold host and chalice surrounded by a red crown of thorns, and black veil.  Although I knew nothing about the different religious rules, I kept hearing the words "Rule of St Augustine" within.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this IWBS habit with the scapular design in Dehey!  Wouldn't it be awesome to have that monogram over one's heart!  Venerable Jeanne de Matel was an interesting person in her own right. 

The more I researched her congregation, the more fascinating they became. The IWBS were cloistered teachers -- like the Ursulines in downtown Louisville had been.  Venerable Jeanne had received volumes of revelations.  Their habit was given in a vision, as well. 

The first IWBS constitutions were based on the Beatitudes.  Their purpose was to make reparation to the Incarnate Word in the Blessed Sacrament, and MAKE THE WORLD LOVE HIM.  An ancillary ministry was to foster/promote vocations.  They were to do this through their schools -- teach the children to love Jesus Hostia, and impress upon them to pass on their faith. 

After Vatican II, the habit was modified, and ministries, diversified.  Some IWBS convents still require novitiate sisters to wear the full (post-Vatican II) habit.  A sister usually has the choice of wearing either the habit, or red garments with the IWBS pin.

I am going to begin with this clearinghouse link which explains from where the US Benedictine sisters immigrated. There are several federations (right click to open link) which branched from Eichstadt, Germany:

Active Benedictine sisters were actually unusual.  Most,  if not all,  were contemplatives in their native European countries.  Most American Benedictine sisters set down roots in the northern regions of the US. They were part of the Westward Expansion. 

A bit of trivia made itself apparent whilst I researched: 

-- St Joseph Monastery in Minnesota has the distinction of being the largest Benedictine convent in the world.  The congregation had over a thousand sisters at the time of Dehey.  The convent is rather large,  as well. 

-- Two Benedictine convents began in former saloons. 

-- One Benedictine convent was physically moved (by human means) while the nuns lived their lives.

Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth

The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas, were originally situated in Nashville, Tennessee. The bishop in Kansas asked the Sisters to come work for him, apparently leaving a hole in the religious life fabric of Middle Tennessee. The Somerset, OH, Dominicans made a foundation in Nashville two years later, which became the St Cecilia Congregation.

Ladies of the Sacred Heart of Mary

There are a mere two paragraphs in Dehey regarding this congregation. They came from France, and wore secular attire. However, "Ladies of the Sacred Heart of Mary" doesn't bring up anything on Google search, except for congregations with similar names. 

Most of the Cleveland historical websites simply mention the "Daughters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary" from France. 

From the looks of it, this congregation went back to France, and the Sisters of Charity of St Augustine took over their ministries.

The Third Order Franciscan Sisters section was an eclectic set of congregational histories.  They are designated here by their proper congregational names, along with location, in the next several blog posts.  There are approximately 54 congregations covered. 

The Franciscan section was a challenge.  While the Dominican congregations had come from one of two main European motherhouses, or had branched off another domestic congregation, some Franciscans were domestic, and others, from foreign lands. Several had identical congregational names. Three cities had two or more congregations.  For someone unfamiliar with the geography, note-taking was indispensable for keeping track of everything. 

I found a couple of congregations that had been left out of the narratives altogether, so I must be in good company where the confusion is concerned!  These congregations were listed in the appendix, though. I found one congregation that wasn't in Dehey at all, but a Google search revealed that they were in existence at the time of publication.  I have included them.

The School Sisters of Notre Dame were founded in Germany, and are the spiritual cousins of the Congregation of Our Lady. The latter was founded by St Peter Fourier and Blessed Alix LeClerc.  

SSND foundress Theresa Gerhardinger had been educated by the Fourier religious.  The clergy assisting her with the project strongly suggested that she adapt the Fourier spirituality.

Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary: Monroe; Immaculata; Scranton

When I first found the Dehey tome, I had been Catholic perhaps 1.5 years. I knew that four great motherhouses were historically situated in the archdiocese in which I resided.  I didn't know how they were different.  I attended a church conducted by the Dominican Friars. They wore white, sometimes with black.  I learned that there was a Discalced Carmelite monastery in the same city.  They looked like St Therese the Little Flower, and prayed all the time. 

However, I did not understand the concept of spirituality. Dehey was more of a picture book for me. 

So, with what seems to be slight embarrassment, I present this post regarding the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In my three decades of promoting vocations, I never realized that they are Redemptorist in spirituality, with a good dose of Teresian Carmelite. 

They were also co-founded by the former superior of the Oblates Sisters of Providence, the first congregation by and for women of color in the world.  The foundress would eventually be sent into exile, over a jurisdictional dispute.  Despite wearing the habit of the Canadian Grey Nuns for 17 years, she remained an IHM at heart. The last seven years of her life would be spent with the congregation she founded. 

The founding priest ran afoul of superiors, supposedly, and ended up a Cistercian monk in France. He was able to meet with the Sisters again just before his death. 

I also found a source (WikiWand) that said that the IHMs never spoke of their foundress because she was a woman of color - until recently.
