Dominican Nuns of Perpetual Adoration

The Dominican Nuns of Perpetual Adoration have always been cloistered Second Order. The perpetual adoration actually started in France, and was brought to the US by the founders of the Newark monastery.

There were four "eclectic" Dominican congregations in the US at the time of Dehey: Hawthorne; Presentation; Sick Poor; and Maryknoll. 

Three of the four are still their own entities.  The Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor have merged with two others. More on that later, though.

Dehey lists a Dominican congregation on Madison Avenue in Albany, and the Sisters led retreats. That area of Madison Avenue is the College of St Rose, which was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet.

Dominican Sisters I: Springfield, KY; Columbus; Sinsinawa; San Rafael; Amityville; Newburgh; New Orleans; Nashville

The original title of the chapter was "Third Order Dominican Sisters". I have posted simply "Dominican Sisters" to reflect the Order of Preachers' 1970s decision to scuttle delineations and call themselves "Family."

There's also a pdf regarding the centennial celebration in 1922, but I can't get the URL. However, a Google search for the St Catharine Motherhouse should bring it up. The pdf gives an excellent reflection on the Dominican motto, and how the Sisters lived it.

At one time, there were 30 congregations of Dominican Sisters, with the primary apostolate of teaching - hence the I, II, and III designations.  Due to a lack of Vocations, two new congregations were formed from mergers. The mergers will be discussed in the Vocational Links post.

Religious of the Sacred Heart

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RCSJ) were the first women's congregation of Ignatian spirituality in the US.

Founded in France by St Madeline Sophie Barat, the RSCJ were brought to the US by St Rose Phillipine Duchesne.
